WORKS ON PAPER
"Mexican music and food. Mexican television and radio. Mexican names of cities, states, rivers, and mountains. Anglo America continues to deny how much the social, cultural, political, and economic reality of the West and Southwest has been shaped by Mexicans. They have been part of its creation and they will form an even bigger part of its future." ~ Juan Gonzalez, Harvest of Empire
In 2021, my work will take on a new subject: Colonization. Not surprisingly, given the current controversy regarding immigration policy and the border wall, it is a subject that is being intensely discussed by young Chicanx historians. As an artist, it offers me the opportunity to visually reframe the political and philosophical issues, and in doing so to echo the repercussions of the savage expropriation of the Western Hemisphere that continue to impact the descendants of indigenous people to present day. Included are three works from the recent past that more properly belong in this series.
